Brookhill Asylum was created in 1843 to hide away the incurably insane, but as the years progressed more and more people who were just different that were showing up at Brookhill. There were those who showed signs of mutant abilities being shipped here. Whether they were psychic or physical mutations, if the government found out about them, then they were sent here for treatment. It didn't help that most were so abused by then time the government found them they were insane anyway. Their families would try to beat the "Devil" out of the children before they were brought to the asylum. They even had priest to try and exorcise the demons who were clearly possessing their children.
In the 1900's because of a high fluctuation of deaths from the asylum it was shut down, and the patients released back to their families. Though that wasn't a better option for them really. They still ended up dead, but this time instead of by doctors or their own hands, by their own families, priests, and neighbors. So in 1973 Brooklane asylum was reopened. And the doors of the asylum welcomed all mutants AND those with mental illnesses.
It is now 2015 and Brookhill is still the government's favorite mutant dumping zone, and there is still deaths because of suicide and malpractice, but recently there has been a massive patient break out. The escapees ran into the forest on the island and are being hunted by the asylum's staff, doctors, and other escapees. So was the break out worth it? Well they's going to find out, who knows they may miss the 'wonders' and 'safety' of the asylum. But those still in the asylum may wish they escaped when they had the chance.
